Oscars 2016: A Rundown of the Nominees

At 5:30 AM PST, the Academy announced the nominees for the 2016 Academy Awards.

The Revenant, the new movie by last year’s Best Director and Best Picture winner Alejandro Inarritu, is in the lead with 12 nominations, including Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Supporting Actor (Tom Hardy), Best Lead Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Director (Inarritu) and Best Picture. The Revenant won the Golden Globe for Best Picture – Drama earlier this week.

Following close behind with 10 nominations is Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth installment in George Miller’s beloved post-apocalyptic franchise. Mad Max competes against the Revenant in all 10 of its categories, and is up for nominations including Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Director (Miller) and Best Picture.

In third place is Ridley Scott’s The Martian with 8 nominations, which is up for Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Lead Actor (Matt Damon) and Best Picture. The Martian won the Golden Globe for Best Picture – Comedy on Sunday.

Spotlight, Bridge of Spies, and Carol are tied for fourth place with 6 nominations each. Both Spotlight and Bridge of Spies are nominated for Best Picture.

The ceremony was hosted by director Guillermo Del Toro (Crimson Peak, Pan’s Labryinth), director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi), Actor John Krasinski (The Office, 13 Hours), and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
