Harry Potter alum David Yates is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to return to the magical world, to direct the new Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The screenplay is currently being written by J.K. Rowling, set 70 years before the original series began and focusing on the author of required Hogwarts student textbook; Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newton Artemis Fido Scamander.

J.K Rowling wrote and released Harry Potter’s own copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2001. All proceeds from the book sales were donated to help improve and save the lives of children around the world.

The traditionally all-British film franchise will be crossing the pond for the spin-off. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is due to take place on American soil, more specifically in New York. Scamander is a writer, hired to assemble a guide to magical beasts. The movies will follow the escapades and trials of Scamander as he works to complete the ultimate guide to the beasts of the magical world.

Yates has plenty of experience with the Harry Potter franchise, directing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2. Rowling made sure she was always involved with the Harry Potter movies and developed a good relationship with Yates as a result, which made him a perfect choice to captain this new Potter venture.

Yates is currently filming Warner Bros. Tarzan, starring Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie.
