“Oy with the poodles already!” “Copper Boom!” Gilmore Girls fans rejoice because the series is reportedly getting a limited-series revival on Netflix.
News broke on TVLine on October 19, 2015 that the beloved WB series, Gilmore Girls would be receiving a limited-series revival. The revival will reportedly consist of four 90-minute episodes.
Negotiations are still in the works and casting is now beginning. TVLine reports that Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop and Scott Patterson are all expected to return for this limited series. Although casting isn’t set in stone, a source told The Hollywood Reporter that the limited-series is slated to begin production early next year.
The topic of Gilmore Girls returning was most notably brought up this past summer at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, TX. The panel featured most of the original cast of Gilmore Girls including Graham, Bledel, Bishop, Patterson, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Liza Weil, Keiko Agena, Danny Strong, Matt Czuchry, Jackson Douglas, Todd Lowe, Liz Torres, Yanic Truesdale, John Cabrera, Jared Padalecki and Milo Ventimiglia. With Gilmore Girls beginning streaming on Netflix last fall, the topic of a reunion was breached several times during the panel.
As previously reported by Emertainment Monthly, early in the ATX Television Festival panel Kelly Bishop discussed the prospect of more Gilmore Girls by saying, “Collectively we’re going to make this happen!” Later in the panel, Scott Patterson chimed in on the subject saying, “I think it’s about time!” Amy Sherman-Palladino said, “there’s nothing in the works, but here’s the good thing, nobody here hates each other. It would have to be the right everything—the right format, the right timing, it would have to be honored in a certain way. And if it ever came around, we would all jump in and do it. And if it ever happened, I promise you I’d do it correctly.” Looks like the entire cast and crew worked their Gilmore Girls magic and are making this reunion a reality.
Long-time Gilmore Girls fans will also realize that they will FINALLY learn the last four words Amy Sherman-Palladino intended the series to end with. According to TVLine, the deal will allow Sherman-Palladino to conclude Gilmore Girls the way she intended to. She left the original series prior to the final season due to a contract dispute with Warner Brothers.
Gilmore Girls isn’t the first beloved television series Netflix has revived. The company brought to life an additional season of Arrested Development after it was cancelled. The new season did incredibly well for the streaming service and sparked the trend. Recently, Netflix announced they would be producing Fuller House, a new series following the beloved characters of Full House. Gilmore Girls will hopefully be the latest series to get a second life on Netflix.
Gilmore Girls originally ran for seven seasons and followed single mother, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her daughter, Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) and their adventures in the small, eccentric town of Stars Hollow, CT. As Rory goes from entering a rigorous private school to pursuing her dream as a newspaper reporter, her and Lorelai conquer every day life together. From first boyfriends to mending a broken relationship with Lorelai’s parents, Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard (Edward Herrmann), Gilmore Girls may go down as one of the greatest comedic and dramatic television shows of all time.
Gilmore Girls fans can now jump into speculation mode and start wondering where all of their favorite characters will be/end up with the new limited series. Will Lorelai marry Luke? Will Rory and Jess get back together? Will Melissa McCarthy reprise her role as Sookie St. James? One major factor the new Gilmore Girls series will have to address is the death of Richard Gilmore and how Emily will be dealing with life as a widow. Sadly, beloved patriarch Edward Herrmann passed away in December 2014.
More news will surely come to light as the limited-series nears a final deal with Netflix, but for now fans can re-watch their favorite Gilmore Girls episodes and get ready for more adventure with Lorelai, Rory and the entire Stars Hollow gang.
