First Look: Lone Survivor

Daniella Cuencas ’16 / Emertainment Monthly Editor

The movie Lone Survivor is based off of the novel with the same name, written by Marcus Luttrell. This book has had a lot of success in the non-fiction genre and continues to receive great reviews. Lone Survivor is about SEAL team 10 as they try, but fail to complete Operation Red Wings, which involves killing Ahmad Shahd, a well-known Taliban leader.

For the actor line-up there is Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Eric Bana, who round out the top cast for this movie. And after watching the trailer, it seems like these guys did a great job of making the characters seem like people. Not only does this film focus on the mission, but it focuses on the stories of the characters as well. The trailer opens up with some shots of the characters lives. Then the movie evolves to show the kind of problems these men faced on their mission. Like deciding whether to kill a young boy who spotted them or allow him to live but tell the rest of the Taliban where the SEALs are located. That scene was done well because you could feel the indecision and high tension present in that moment. The cinematic version of Lone Survivor is going to be about more than just how many big guns these guys can shoot. The movie will feature seemingly real moments of camaraderie, desperation, and ultimately loss.

Director of Lone Survivor, Peter Webb, who is most known for Friday Night Lights and Hancock, embedded himself in SEAL team 5 for a month so as to make this movie seem factual, and more importantly realistic. The biggest worry that this movie has is whether it will honor and respect the men who died on this mission, but judging from the movie poster, “based on true acts of courage,” no disrespect was meant. This film is rated R and comes out January 14, 2014.
